Sam is a native Iowan, born in and raised near Des Moines. She attended Iowa State University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music – Percussion Performance in 2005. Her favorite musical instrument is the marimba and she still loves to perform orchestral and chamber percussion music. During her time at Iowa State, she also focused on science studies to prepare for a career in medicine -“a musician should always have a day job.” She then attended medical school at the University of Iowa, graduating in 2010. She continued her medical training in Iowa City and completed an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. After serving as Chief Resident, Sam will pursue a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
In her free time Sam enjoys listening to music, practicing and playing percussion, reading, and traveling.
